Winning at Life - “DON’T POST YOUR HUNGER”
Today we are going to be talk about fasting today… and I can already feel the room tighten up a little.
Because prayer? We’re good with prayer. Reading the Bible? We’ll nod at that.
Fasting? Everybody suddenly needs a snack.
Fasting is one of those spiritual disciplines where the moment you hear about it… you start thinking about food you weren’t even hungry for five minutes ago.
You ever notice that?
You can go all day not thinking about donuts… but the second somebody says “fast”…
your brain goes, “You know what sounds spiritual right now? A dozen glazed, an apple fritter and a kolache.”
And here’s the problem… Most of us don’t struggle with fasting because we don’t love God.
We struggle with fasting because… we love chips and queso.
I personally can get up and not eat breakfast… not an issue, and if I am busy studying and writing, working on book or message for Sunday, I can blow right through lunch.
But when I need to get blood work done and they tell me “you have to fast for 12 hours before coming in for your 3:30 lab appointment” Well, that is a different story.
So, I wake up and skipped breakfast. By 10:30… I was already checking the clock like it owed me money.
By 11:15… I’m in my office… not praying… I’m watching cooking videos.
At 11:45 I had convinced myself the Lord was leading me to break the fast early… too heck with the blood work, I need a Chick-fil-A sandwich.
And here’s what I realized… I didn’t just have a hunger problem. I had a dependency problem.
Because the moment food was off the table… everything in me started screaming for a CFS.
And that’s when it hit me… It’s not about not eating…
it’s about why you’re not eating and what you’re doing instead.
