Winning at Life - “Build a great life”

Jesus was a builder by trade. We think of him as a carpenter but he was more, he was a builder of large things. When Jesus was addressed as a carpenter it was a diminishing comment. Especially people in his home town. They knew Jesus and His dad built big things. It is funny how your can’t escape the label of your hometown.

During His day architecture was influenced by King Herod the great. King Herod was a great builder. He rebuilt the temple at Jerusalem, he built the beautiful Oceanside city of Caesarea, he build the fortress of Masada, along with other famous structures. This is the same Herod that killed the babies in Bethlehem and murdered his wife, mother in law and a few sons. He was brilliant and crazy. Although he was the King over the Jews he was not Jewish. That another story.

Herod used a distinct style of building. He used large stones surrounded by smaller stones. When you see the building built by Herod his style becomes evident. Jesus used the same word picture to describe how he would build our lives….it starts with the large stone foundation.
